PREFACE

Chris Welch of The Verge has reported that Twitter Inc. (NYSE:TWTR) is finally changing its long awaited character count in its tweets.

STORY

It feels like a year ago (but it was actually May) that Twitter announced it would stop counting images and quoted tweets as a part of its now famed 140 character tweet limit. It turns out, September 19th is the day.

Here's what Jack Dorsey told the Verge:

"This is the most notable change we've made in recent times around conversation in particular, and around giving people the full expressiveness of the 140 characters. I'm excited to see even more dialog because of this."

But, that quote from Dorsey to the Verge was actually made back in May.

IT'S CHANGING

In just the last few months the narrative surrounding Twitter Inc. (NYSE:TWTR) has gone from one of utter confusion and lack of innovation, to a radical shift in identity and free flowing innovation. Suddenly Twitter is going to be home to live streaming sports, including every major sports franchise in the United States as well as collegiate athletics and the English Premier League.

Bloomberg TV is already a part of the #GoLive initiative and just today Twitter announced that it has teamed up with Cheddar, a news start-up, for more stock market live streaming content.

It feels appropriate that today we found out that all of the talk surrounding improved tweet length is finally being delivered as well. We don't know where the company will go, but we can see rather plainly that it is finally going.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Twitter is chasing the revolution that is online video. It will change the advertising landscape like the radio did in the 1920s and the television did in the 1950s. But one company is powering the advertising in online video for Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and soon Snapchat and its tiny compared to these firms.
